Convert HEIC to JPG privately, no upload
iPhone photos are HEIC, and many websites won't take them. The quick fix most people find is a HEIC converter website, which means uploading personal photos, often of family, home or documents, to a server you know nothing about. Krisox converts HEIC to JPG or PNG inside your browser, as you upload.
Why it matters for HEIC
Most online compressors and converters work by uploading your file to their servers, processing it there and sending a copy back. While it's there, it's covered by their privacy policy and retention rules, not yours, and it may pass through other companies' storage and networks.
iPhone photos are about as personal as files get, and they carry the location where each one was taken.
How Krisox converts HEIC (Pro)
- Choose your HEIC photo in any upload form.
- Krisox asks "Convert 1 HEIC photo?" with JPG selected; choose PNG if you prefer.
- Pick a level; each shows the resulting size.
- Click "Upload compressed". The site receives IMG_1234.jpg instead of IMG_1234.HEIC.
What happens to the photo
- Chrome can't open HEIC, so Krisox brings its own decoder (the open-source libheif), which runs inside your browser.
- Rotation is applied, so portrait photos stay upright.
- Location (GPS) and other metadata are removed as the JPG or PNG is created.
- If a site only accepts PNG, Krisox converts to PNG automatically.
The three levels
- Extreme: at most 1,600 pixels on the longest side, strong compression. The smallest files.
- Recommended: at most 2,560 pixels, balanced compression. Sharp on any screen.
- Light: at most 4,096 pixels, gentle compression. The most detail, smaller savings.
Check it yourself
- Open Chrome's developer tools (Cmd+Option+I on a Mac, Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows) and choose the Network tab.
- Upload a file on any site and let Krisox compress or convert it.
- You'll see the website's own upload, and no request from Krisox carrying your file: Krisox never sends files anywhere.
Without Krisox
- On your iPhone: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible saves new photos as JPG.
- Mac: open the photo in Preview and use File → Export, choosing JPEG.
- Windows: with the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, the Photos app can open HEIC and save a copy as JPG.
Questions
Why is the JPG bigger than the HEIC?
HEIC is the more efficient format, so the same photo as JPG is often larger, especially at Light. Krisox shows each size before you choose.
Can I keep the photo as HEIC and just compress it?
No. Browsers can read HEIC with help, but nothing in the browser can write it, so Krisox always converts.
Is it free?
Converting HEIC is part of Krisox Pro, like all format conversions.
Krisox is a browser extension for Chrome. Compressing one file at a time is free; converting formats and compressing several files at once are part of Krisox Pro.
