JPG to PNG converter

Convert JPG to PNG in your browser. Your file never leaves your device.

About this tool

Some forms and design tools only take PNG. Converting a JPG to PNG is quick, but it's worth knowing what it can and can't do. Convert yours here, in your browser.

JPG and PNG

  • JPG: lossy, made for photos, no transparency, accepted almost everywhere.
  • PNG: lossless, keeps sharp edges and transparency, large for photos.

What changes when you convert

  • The file usually gets bigger: PNG stores every pixel exactly, and photos have a lot of them.
  • Quality doesn't improve: the PNG keeps the JPG exactly as it is now, compression marks included.
  • From now on, editing and re-saving won't lose any more quality.

When to convert JPG to PNG

  • A form only accepts PNG.
  • You'll edit the image several times and don't want quality to drop each time.

Private by design

Converter websites upload your file to their servers to do this. With this tool the conversion happens in your browser: the file is never uploaded, to us or anyone else, and location data (EXIF) is removed from photos along the way.

Converting because a website only accepts PNG? Krisox Extension Pro does it for you in the upload form itself, as you upload.

Without this tool

  • Mac: open the JPG in Preview, then File → Export and choose PNG.
  • Windows: open it in Paint, then File → Save as → PNG picture.

Questions

Why is the PNG so much bigger?

PNG is lossless: it can't throw detail away the way JPG does, so a photo takes more space. Pick Extreme or Recommended to reduce the dimensions if size matters.

Will converting add a transparent background?

No. Transparency has to be painted in an image editor; converting only changes how the picture is stored.
