About this tool
PNG keeps transparency but makes big files. WebP keeps transparency too, at a fraction of the size. Convert a PNG to WebP here, in your browser.
PNG and WebP
- PNG: lossless, keeps sharp edges and transparency, large for photos.
- WebP: smaller than JPG at similar quality, supports transparency, not accepted by every upload form.
What changes when you convert
- Much smaller, especially for photos and large graphics.
- Transparency is kept.
- This tool makes lossy WebP (the quality setting depends on the level), so pick Light for logos and text that must stay razor-sharp.
When to convert PNG to WebP
- You need a small image with a transparent background.
- You publish images on the web and want faster pages.
Private by design
Converter websites upload your file to their servers to do this. With this tool the conversion happens in your browser: the file is never uploaded, to us or anyone else, and location data (EXIF) is removed from photos along the way.
Converting because a website only accepts WebP? Krisox Extension Pro does it for you in the upload form itself, as you upload.
Without this tool
- Image editors such as GIMP (free) export WebP.
- Google's free cwebp command-line tool converts in bulk, including lossless WebP.
Questions
Is the WebP lossless?
No, this tool makes lossy WebP, which is far smaller. For pixel-perfect graphics, keep the PNG or use Light.
Will every site accept WebP?
Not all upload forms do. If yours rejects it, convert to PNG or JPG instead.
